An altar should refect your beliefs or ideas. Don't feel as though you need any particular thing to make it an altar. An altar can be as simple as a shelf on the wall with a picture or a candle on it, or it can be more formal.

The best way to do this is to start simple with whatever is most important to you, and add things as you feel you want them there. For example, if there is a particular deity you worship, place an image or symbol of that diety on the altar. You can leave it at that. Or, you might want to add a candle, maybe a stone that is significant to your deity, bits of this and that which connect you with the deity, until you feel right about what you have there. And feel free to change things around, remove some things and add others.

My altar is constantly evolving with the seasons and my own ideas. I have a central Goddess statue, but everything else is movable around Her. Sometimes I have so much stuff that I can barely see the altar, and other times there might be just a candle and incense.

For some ideas, here is a collection of pictures which I searched for using "Pagan Altars" as search terms--

As you can see, some are elaborate and formal, others are simple, and some you wouldn't recognize as altars.

Hi everyone! I'm hoping for some advice here. I know altars are personal things and no one can tell you what to put on your own altar, but maybe some pointers? I've always communed and communicated with the Shining Ones in my head but lately I've been feeling the need to externalize it. I've never put an altar together before and was hoping for some pointers. Thanx
